Science fact: Donut dough rheology is an important property that impacts the overall donut quality. This property measures the ability of the dough to flow. It can be represented by the power law equation: τ=k.D^n where τ is the tangentic stress, k is the viscosity coefficient, D is the shear rate, and n is the flow index. Many factors affect dough rheology including the type of ingredients, the amount of the ingredients, or the force applied during mixing. Dough is usually described as a viscoelastic material, meaning that its rheology depends on both the viscosity and the elasticity. The viscosity coefficient and the flow index are unique to the type of dough being analyzed, while the tangentic stress and the shear rate are measurements obtained depending on the type force being applied to the dough. #nerds

Philadelphia

Damn Philly, you so vegan it hurts.

We didn’t even come close to hitting all the major vegan spots in Philadelphia last month when we spent the weekend at PaxUnplugged #nerds

We def didn’t go anywhere or do anything cool except go to the convention center.

It was a whirlwind weekend but I did enjoy the small part of the city that I did see. I definitely plan to come back!.

4-Ingredient Vegan Dog Treats

I make these Vegan dog treats for Ariel and she goes wild for them! And they’re SUPER easy to make. We almost always have all the ingredients for these at home which is super appealing to us. We’re not a family that plans ahead, so when I realize I want to make the dog some treats it’s nice to look around and have all the ingredients already in the house.

You can use cookie cutters to make cute shapes and gift them to your friends with dogs as well!

And as always, dog treats are just that, a treat. Give one or two a day (size of dog should guide you here), these aren’t a substitute for a nutritionally balanced meal.

Northampton, Massachusetts

The land of my college days, where I lived for the first six years of my adult life.

One of the best things about Northampton is that everyone knows a vegan so most restaurants offer a couple of vegan items.

Ariel: The Perfect Princess

So… I know I said I would be blogging a lot more.

And I have been posting a bit, but I’ve been so busy with our new DOG that i haven’t been writing as much. Or doing anything worth writing about.

Wait what?

Yes we adopted a dog!! Her name is Ariel. She’s a 7 yo brindle pit mix (part Am. Staff, part Rottie, part unknown).

I had been ‘eyeing’ her since her first post on Susie’s Senior Dogs on Instagram.

Mike and I weren’t in the business of adopting a dog, but we had discussed it casually before. My conditions were:

1. Must adopt – no breeder

2. Must be a dog that would normally have trouble finding a good home (pit bull, old dog, physical problems, etc.)

Ariel fits the bill in more ways than one! It took all of two seconds to convince Mike that we needed her as our dog. So after waiting much longer than normal (the cats we were fostering for a friend needed to go home first) we were finally able to adopt and pick up our sweet girl. You can read her pre-forever home story on the rescue’s website.

She is wonderful in so many ways. She likes low-medium exercise each day, she’s potty trained, she loves cuddling, she likes to please you, she trains well. Uh! I could go on.

Ariel is reactive towards other dogs. She seems pretty scared of them, but when you’re used for breeding and then abandoned to live in a shelter for four years I can’t imagine you’d be properly socialized. We’re working on it and while it’s not obvious we are making some progress.

Besides having an ‘only-dog’ really isn’t a huge challenge. We don’t take her to the off leash dog park and she doesn’t have doggie play dates. But other than that our lives are relatively normal dog-people lives.

She has been totally wonderful and I’m so thankful we have her. There are challenges – like the time she ate an entire pizza. But the rewards are tenfold.

Having Ariel has been a wonderful and time consuming part of my life for the last month or so and I absolutely love it!

Zucchini Boats

It’s that time of year again to get your squash on. And if you’re like me, and forgot to harvest your squashes from the garden, you have obnoxiously large zucchini.

Seriously. Look at that monster. Just a tip! If you can pierce the skin easily with your fingernail the zucchini is still fine. If it’s super tough there’s a chance you let it grow too long. When they’re tough like that I’ll make zucchini bread with it but I wouldn’t use it in a recipe like this one.

 

Fun Fact: The Guinness World Record for zucchini length is 2.52 m (or 8ft 3.3in), measured in 2014 in Canada.

Strawberry Ice Cream

It’s ice cream season. And those of you that have an ice cream maker may be looking to put it to good use.

My garden has about 15 strawberry plants this year and I got a great haul of fresh berries the other week.

That’s when I realized that I haven’t used my ice cream maker, or made ‘traditional’ (aka not banana or avocado ice cream) ice cream since I became vegan.

So please enjoy my veganized version of this strawberry ice cream recipe. I cut the sugar in it because I found it to be too sweet the first time, but you can add more if you like it to be sweeter.

History Fact: Former president Ronald Reagan made July the official month for ice cream in 1984 and National Ice Cream Day this year (2016) is July 17th.
